  1. Hi everyone,

I'm finishing my MBA in Supply Chain & Operations at Indiana University while transitioning from 4+ years as a Marine Corps Logistics Officer to civilian supply chain analyst/coordinator roles. Despite managing logistics operations for 900+ personnel and completing supply chain coursework, I'm struggling to get past ATS screening for entry-level positions because my military experience hasn't translated well on paper to civilian recruiters, and my prior education was in nutrition (MS, RD).

For those who've made similar transitions or hired veterans into supply chain roles: what certifications (CSCP vs. CPIM) and positioning strategies helped most? Happy to connect individually if anyone's willing to share lessons learned.

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

    • Jackson, I believe there is much more to this than what is better and would enjoy to connect and talk. I sent you a LinkedIn request to connect there as well.

  2. Good Morning, Exploring the academic side of supply chain—looking for perspective

I’m beginning to explore whether a PhD in Supply Chain / Operations is the right long-term path for me—specifically as it relates to teaching, research, and practitioner-academic impact.

    If anyone here has:

    • Transitioned from industry into academia
    • Balanced doctoral study with professional practice
    • Strong opinions on when a PhD makes sense (and when it doesn’t)

I’d value hearing what you wish you had `known earlier. I’m early in the exploration phase and mostly listening.

Appreciate this group’s willingness to share hard-earned insight.

    • Jaya, I would like to connect with you sometime and explore this in more detail. would you be open to connecting to discuss more? I would be very interested in your perspectives as I couldn't agree more with some of the challenges facing this landscape. It would be great to get the PhD in some passion area and then utilize it to further advance the field in more of an operational setting that academia, I think. I just love the problem solving side and having those wins, but as a previous Professor at University of Georgia, I really loved watching the light bulb turn on as well. So little confused in the passion and hence the explorations.

  3. Good Morning, Looking for mentorship and ways to give back to ASCM

Over the past few years, ASCM has played a meaningful role in how I think about supply chain, teaching, and developing others. As I look ahead, I’m interested in taking a more active role beyond certifications—specifically around instruction, mentoring, and contributing to ASCM learning initiatives.

I’d love to connect with anyone who has experience with:

    • Becoming an ASCM Instructor / Instructor-Certified
    • Supporting student chapters, projects, or case-based learning
    • The longer-term path toward ASCM Fellow recognition

I’m not looking for a formal commitment—just perspective, lessons learned, and guidance on where to focus energy in a way that’s genuinely helpful to the community.

If you’ve walked this path (or are currently on it), I’d really appreciate a conversation or point in the right direction. Feel free to comment or DM.

Thank you in advance—this community consistently reinforces why I stay engaged here.

  6. All - When is the best time to block the dates for the certification test?. Are the appointments hard to get at short notice?

should i be thinking of an appointment date once i am through with all my modules and take a call based on the preparation levels??

    Appreciate your inputs.

    Thanks,

    Girish

I recommend that you finish all the reading, quizzes and practice exam in your learning system whithin 6 months of your purchase so you have 6 months ahead to schedule and take your first chance. The timing to schedule your exam will depend on how busy the test centers are in your area of residence/work. Go to the Pearson Vue Site and look for the different test centers nearby your home and search for the best time to schedule your exam. Again, the notice to schedule your exam will be dictated by how busy the test center is throughout the year. Most Test Centers receive participants from other certification providers (microsoft, PMI, etc.), so it is better to see the schedule directly in their websites by searching through Pearson Vue.

      Good luck!

  7. Hello everyone,

I’m reaching out to this group for guidance and insight from fellow supply chain professionals.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management and have hands-on experience as an Inventory Control Supervisor, where I managed inventory accuracy, supported operations, and worked closely with cross-functional teams. I’m also CSCP certified and completed the Management Essentials certificate from Harvard Business School Online to further strengthen my leadership and business skills.

Despite this education and experience, I’m finding it challenging to secure my next role in the supply chain field since I moved to US (South Bend). I’ve been actively applying and networking, but I would really appreciate advice from those who’ve navigated a similar situation or are currently hiring.

Some questions I’m hoping to get input on:

    • What steps would you recommend to stand out in today’s job market?
    • Are there specific roles, skills, or tools I should focus on next?
    • How can I better leverage ASCM, certifications, or networking to open doors?
    • Any resume, interview, or job-search strategies that worked well for you?

Thank you in advance for your time and insights. I truly value this community and look forward to learning from your experiences.

    Best regards,

    Neetu Singh

    • Hello Alaa,

There is a good definition in the Dictionnary, the calcul may vary:

"service levelA measure (usually expressed as a percentage) of satisfying demand through inventory or by the current production schedule in time to satisfy the customers’ requested delivery dates and quantities. In a make-to-stock (MTS) environment, service level is sometimes calculated as the percentage of orders picked complete from stock upon receipt of the customer order, the percentage of line items picked complete, or the percentage of total dollar demand picked complete. In make-to-order (MTO) and design-to-order (DTO) environments, service level is the percentage of times the customer-requested or acknowledged date was met by shipping complete product quantities. Syns.: level of service, measure of service. See: cycle service level."

So it basically measures the ability to meet customer demand, considering the customer is satisfied if the order is sent in full on the desired or agreed / quoted date.
