Can transaction data alone establish procurement leakage?
A price variance is a signal to investigate—not proof of commercial leakage.
In procurement, a transaction may appear unusually expensive when compared with historical prices. But before concluding that value has been lost, we need to understand the context.
For example:
- Were the specifications and quantities comparable?
- Did freight, delivery location or urgency affect the price?
- Was the applicable contract or rate card followed?
- Were the purchase and payment properly authorized?
- Does the invoice reconcile with the purchase order and goods received?
Transaction analytics can help identify anomalies and prioritize investigations. However, confirming commercial leakage requires supporting evidence and human validation.
My question to this community: Which control do you find most effective for validating a suspected procurement price variance—contract-rate comparison, invoice-to-PO reconciliation, or another method?
I'd welcome perspectives from professionals working across procurement, supply chain and commercial operations.
