AI vs. Experience in Supply Chain Management: Is Information Enough to Make You an Expert?

Artificial Intelligence is transforming the supply chain industry, making information, strategies, and solutions available within seconds.

But here is an important question: Does having access to information automatically make someone a supply chain expert?

Supply chain professionals spend years developing their knowledge through education, hands-on experience, challenges, failures, and continuous learning. Over time, they develop something that goes beyond information: judgment, critical thinking, and the ability to make the right decisions in complex situations.

Today, AI can generate procurement strategies, inventory models, logistics plans, and demand forecasts almost instantly. This is a powerful advantage, but knowing an answer is not the same as understanding why it works.

Think of it this way: having access to medical information does not make someone a doctor. Similarly, having access to supply chain knowledge does not automatically make someone a supply chain expert.

Real expertise comes from understanding the entire process—from the desired outcome back to the starting point. It means knowing why a decision was made, what alternatives were considered, which risks were evaluated, and how to respond when circumstances change.

AI should not be seen as a replacement for experience. Instead, it should be a tool that helps experienced professionals make better decisions and enables new professionals to learn faster.

The real competitive advantage will belong to those who combine AI-driven insights with practical experience, sound judgment, and critical thinking.

Because in supply chain management, success is not just about having the information. It is about knowing how, when, and why to use it.

💬 What do you think? Will AI make supply chain professionals more effective, or will it create a growing gap between having information and possessing real expertise?

I would welcome your thoughts and perspectives.
